Ultrasonography / Ultrasound uses high energy sound waves to look at the tissues and organs by producing images. Ultrasound is done by a physician to look into the female abdomen and pelvis. The ultrasound scans provide information related to ovarian reserves, the uterine shape, condition of fallopian tubes and more.

During the ultrasound, the technician applies a gel to your abdomen. This gel helps the sound waves travel as required. Then the technician moves a device called the transducer on your abdomen. The transducer captures black and white images of your abdomen on the ultrasound screen.

Types of pregnancy ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasound

Ultrasound is used during the early stages of pregnancy. A special probe is inserted into the vagina to generate images of the baby. Performing transvaginal ultrasounds is safe for pregnant women and the baby because no radiation is used in this ultrasound.

3D ultrasound

A 3D ultrasound follows the same procedure as a standard ultrasound it uses different kinds of probes and software to create 3D images. It helps to see the width, height images of the developing baby.

4D ultrasound

A 4D ultrasound is also called a dynamic 3D ultrasound. It creates a live video of the fetus. This ultrasound is performed with special equipment.

Fetal echocardiography

Fetal echocardiography is performed to check on your baby’s heart. The test is done to figure out the heart size, shape and structure. It is generally ordered if the doctors are suspecting a heart defect in the baby’s heart.
