Intrauterine Insemination or IUI is the most traditional painless treatment procedure for infertility. IUI is a type of assisted conception procedure. Ovulation, cleansed and prepared sperm are deliberately put near the egg in the mother’s uterus so that correct fertilization of the egg and sperm can occur.

For special situations of infertility, this is the simplest and most efficient treatment. The treatment is also cost-effective, in addition to being simple. The purpose of IUI is to expose the egg to more sperm to increase the odds of pregnancy, i.e. the formation of a healthy embryo.

Overview Of Intrauterine insemination( IUI )

Many couples’ first port of call is intrauterine insemination (IUI). It is less difficult to go through than assisted reproductive technologies such as in-vitro fertilization, and it is significantly less expensive.

During the treatment process, the egg is released from the ovary and picked up by the fallopian tubes. Sperm (about 10% of total volume) swims into the uterus, where a portion of it finds and binds to the egg.

If everything goes as planned, the egg is fertilized and develops into an embryo, which is then moved into the uterus by tube. Simply put, an IUI is a supplement to this process.

Who can IUI help?

In comparison to more invasive and costly treatments such as in vitro fertilization, IUI is a relatively noninvasive and less expensive fertility treatment. In some cases, couples may first go with IUI before moving on to IVF if necessary. IUI may be the only fertility treatment required to conceive.

IUI can be performed with either the sperm of the male partner or donor sperm. The following are the most common scenarios in which IUI is used:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Mild endometriosis
  • Cervical mucus or cervix problems
  • Sperm count is low
  • Slowed sperm motility
  • Ejaculation or Erection problems
  • Couples who plan to have a child
  • A single woman who wants to have a child
  • The Couple who want to avoid passing on a genetic defect from the male partner to their child

IUI is ineffective in the following circumstances:

  • Women suffering from moderate to severe endometriosis
  • Women whose fallopian tubes are blocked or have been removed
  • Women suffering from severe fallopian tube disease
  • Women who have had several pelvic infections
  • Men who do not produce sperm (unless the couple wishes to use donor sperm)

If you want to know detail about your options for conceiving, your doctor can advise you on the best path to take.
